Fresh riddle over Alonso crash as driver prepares for F1 return

MCLAREN have added to the intrigue surrounding double world champion Fernando Alonso’s pre-season crash by revealing previously unknown details of the mystery shunt.

Alonso missed the season-opening Australian Grand Prix due to concussion suffered in the high-speed accident in Barcelona last month but is set to race in Malaysia this week, pending final medical checks. The Formula One team have disclosed few details of the crash, which took place during testing, but said yesterday the Spaniard recalled his steering stiffening up before colliding with barriers.

“While there was nothing evident in the extensive car telemetry data, nor anything abnormal in the subsequent reconstructions and laboratory tests, Fernando recalls a sense of ‘heavy’ steering prior to the accident,” McLaren said. “Consequently, the team has fitted an additional sensor to the car, to increase data capture.”

Alonso was cleared to fly to Malaysia for Sunday’s race after undergoing tests in England at the weekend.
