‘Genius’ Phillips at the double to inspire Blues

BIRMINGHAM boss Alex McLeish described veteran striker Kevin Phillips as a “genius” after his late double stunned midlands rivals Wolves at St Andrews.
The 36-year-old climbed off the substitute’s bench to net twice in the last ten minutes after Kevin Doyle had given the visitors a first-half lead.
First, Phillips volleyed home from close range after new signing Craig Gardner had headed across goal, then, with five minutes left, won the game for the Blues when converting a Stephen Carr cross.
McLeish was quick to heap praise on his golden oldie, insisting: “Kevin will never lose that ability he has got in the box.
“He might lose his teeth, he might go bald, and his legs will go at some stage, but he will always have that magnificent technique and touch of a top player.
“He ghosts into areas where the ball might drop, and that is the mark of a genius.”
