A rare total solar eclipse will sweep across Spain and parts of northern Europe, sparking a tourism rush and a scientific opportunity.

Russia's remote Arctic north will see the Moon first cover the Sun, creating a brief flash of the Sun's corona before the shadow moves across Greenland, Iceland and then the Iberian Peninsula. The path of totality will cut across Spain from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean, offering the first total eclipse over mainland Europe in two decades and the first over Spain in more than a century.
For travellers and local economies, the event is a windfall. Officials estimate that more than 446,000 extra visitors could generate around €347 million in revenue, while scientists anticipate a rare chance to study the Sun's outer atmosphere.
The total phase will last under two‑and‑a‑half minutes in the far north, shrinking to less than two minutes over Spain just before sunset. A partial eclipse, the Moon beginning and ending its transit across the Sun, will be visible for about one hour and forty‑five minutes across most of Europe, Canada, the northern United States and northwest Africa.
"It's the first time and it's the last time, the only time I'm going to see an eclipse," said Yenny Guevera, a 50‑year‑old Peruvian living in France, as she stood in Burgos, north‑west Spain.
British solar physicist Lucie Green plans to watch from a boat off Mallorca, describing the experience as "a moving experience". In Reykjavik, astronomer Saevar Helgi Bragason expressed disappointment over a cloudy forecast, saying it felt "like I've lost someone". Clear skies are expected over Spain, though temperatures above 35°C, and over 40°C in the northeast, raise concerns about heat and wildfires.
Spanish interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska has mobilised nearly 25,000 police officers to manage traffic and safety, after a main road to Catalonia was temporarily blocked by the influx of tourists. Astrophysicist Graham Jones noted that the narrow width of the totality path, only a couple of hundred kilometres, makes Spain uniquely positioned for the event.
Both NASA and the European Space Agency will stream the eclipse live, giving researchers a chance to probe solar winds and magnetic fields. The data could improve space‑weather forecasting, which has practical implications for satellite operations and power grids.
Europe will not see another total eclipse over the Iberian Peninsula until August 2027, when a path will cross southern Spain and northern Africa. An annular eclipse, a "ring of fire", is slated for 2028, offering another opportunity for enthusiasts.
