Rain and cool weather bring relief as Germany battles wildfires

Cooler air and light rain over large parts of Germany on Monday provided a welcome break after a weekend of record‑high temperatures that ignited dozens of forest fires. The wet spell has slowed the spread of blazes that threatened homes and forced evacuations in the western and southern regions.

Key fires stabilise as weather improves

In the early hours, a large blaze in the High Fens nature reserve on the Belgian side of the border, close to the German village of Monschau, was declared stabilised by local fire officials. The fire had prompted the evacuation of several residents as flames approached the border. Light rain, low wind and high humidity helped crews contain the inferno, and the fire is no longer advancing toward Germany.

Further south, a wildfire near Schramberg in Baden-Württemberg proved harder to tame. By Monday morning the fire had consumed more than ten hectares of forest and continued to move toward the nearby settlement of Tennenbronn. Steep, inaccessible terrain has hampered firefighting efforts, and officials warned that full extinguishment could take several days.

"This is good for us," said a fire department spokesman in Kalterherberg, according to a report by Welt.

Other hotspots and the road ahead

In the Westerwald region of Rhineland‑Palatinate, flames brushed residential areas on Sunday, prompting the temporary evacuation of about 20 families before the fire was brought under control. A scrap‑metal pile at a recycling centre in Duisburg also ignited, sending a thick plume of smoke over nearby neighbourhoods before being extinguished. Other incidents over the weekend included a 29‑hectare blaze in Waldaschaff, Franconia, where roughly 80 people were evacuated, and smaller fires in Rechtenbach, Höchheim and Oberhaid in the Bamberg district. Fires were also reported in Langscheid (west of Koblenz), the Saarland district of Neunkirchen, where horses were moved to safety, and in Plauen, Saxony, where a multi‑day fire was finally contained.

Forecasters expect further showers and occasional thunderstorms across central Germany on Tuesday, with the northeast and the stretch from Ortenau to Lake Constance likely to stay dry and sunny. Temperatures should remain modest, ranging from 19 °C in the north to a high of 28 °C in the far southwest.

Authorities stress that the recent rain is a temporary reprieve. With climate‑driven heatwaves becoming more frequent, the risk of new wildfires persists, especially in the densely forested uplands of the Ore Mountains and the eastern Brandenburg region.
