Go on, spoil her
As any retailer will attest, the majority of women’s watches are self-purchased – a fact linked to women catching up with their male colleagues’ salaries. But with Christmas on the horizon, the notion of a gift that ticks should be dawning on our more generous readers. But how on Earth to shop for your clued-up other half? Allow Lynn Schroeder from Bond Street’s sumptuous watch and jewellery emporium Wempe to provide some pointers:
1 First, Schroeder points out, find out if she really does want a mechanical watch. “I’ve had women bringing back mechanical watches because they just didn’t fit in with their lifestyle,” she says.
2 If she does want a mechanical watch, you need to ascertain if it should be self-winding or manual. While men love the ceremony of winding a watch every morning, some women would rather just throw it on, knowing it’s correct.
3 Try to work out what she wants the watch for. Before you go into the store, Schroeder advises that you should know the answer to two questions that her staff always ask: “Does she want an everyday or an evening watch?” and “Will she do sport or swim in it?” These are all-important details.
4 Know her metal preference. “Women can be very picky when it comes to what metals they think suit them. If she wears a lot of silver or white gold, the idea of a yellow or rose gold watch could be anathema and vice versa.”
5 “The best tip though,” Schroeder adds with a wink, “is, if in doubt, make sure you ask for a gift receipt!” After all, the most important thing is that she’s happy…
