Hats off to 1920s elegance

Hats these days get a raw deal. They’re either dramatic creations worn for summer occasions – all too often resembling odd flower arrangements or wedding cakes – or they’re unseemly woollen things we wear for skiing.

But it seems that with the resurgence of 1920s glamour, hats are having a moment of long-neglected elegance. Sahar Freemantle, founder of hat company Ugly Lovely, says: “Back in the 20s, 30s and 40s, even the hats women wore for warmth were elegant, but these days all we’ve got are these woolly hats. But it is possible to wear hats that are both warm and stylish.”

But how? Clare Rous, of Rous Iland private member’s fashion boutique in Mayfair, says: “Hats this season are all about easy glamour. A felt trilby in a soft pink or warm camel tone is the perfect compliment to autumn’s feminine tailoring. Team with high waisted trousers, silk blouse, high heels and a classic overcoat. At the weekend a Russian style fur hat adds instant drama to an otherwise more casual look. Wear with your favourite jeans, a chunky knit and boots.”

I’ll doff my cap to that.
