Home favourite Torrance has Watson in his sights

FORMER Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance insists the niceties towards Open hero Tom Watson will stop this morning when the pair go head-to-head in the Senior Open Championship.

Watson shocked the golfing world by coming within a six-foot putt of a sensational victory in the Open – a performance described by BBC commentator Torrance as “one of the greatest sporting achievements of all time”.

Watson will now be looking to ease the pain of his Open heartache with a fourth British Senior Open victory at Sunningdale this weekend, but will see two-time Order of Merit winner Torrance as one of his main rivals, especially on his home course. “What Tom did at Turnberry last weekend was incredible,” Morning Wire columnist Torrance explained.

“He’s obviously playing extremely well and his presence alone will naturally boost the profile of this event.

“But, after an experience like that, he’s also likely to be pretty tired and hopefully there will be no repeat this weekend.

“Sentiment goes out of the window this week, however. To have the British Senior Open on my home course is pretty special for me and I’ve been waiting for this day for two years now. This is it.

“The course looks in perfect condition and preparation has been ideal, so my focus from here is on my game and to win.”
