Home hero Murray all set for tilt at history
The 22-year-old starts the tournament as second favourite behind five-time winner Roger Federer, following the withdrawal of reigning champion Rafael Nadal.
World No3 Murray’s campaign starts against Robert Kendrick, with their only previous meeting on grass resulting in a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing for the American. Murray does not expect such an easy ride today.
He said: “He’s a tough grass-court player. He obviously proved that when he nearly beat Nadal here in 2006. He has a big game, plays very aggressively and takes a lot of chances, so there is no chance of me underestimating him.”
Murray’s only grand slam final appearance was in losing to Federer at last year’s US Open. In order to seize the Wimbledon crown he is likely to have to beat the man widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, yet Murray remains unfazed.
He added: “I have a lot more confidence now. When the big points come in matches, I feel like I am going to win them. I’m going into every match feeling exactly the same, not worrying about my opponents.”
