Horse racing betting: John Gosden’s second string looks Remarkable value in Jersey Stakes
Finding the winner of the wide-open looking 21-runner Jersey Stakes (Wednesday 2.30pm) looks a pretty unenviable task on paper.
The obvious starting point is Ribchester who was last seen in action finishing third to Galileo Gold in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
With the drop back in trip to seven furlongs, as well as plenty of cut in the ground all likely to suit, Richard Fahey’s colt looks a serious player at 10/1.
The only concern is whether he will be able to shoulder a 5lb penalty if there is anything unexposed lurking beneath him in the weights.
John Gosden’s Castle Harbour has won both racecourse starts so far this campaign with his latest victory in a fiercely competitive York handicap being extremely taking.
However, the manner of that win and the booking of Frankie Dettori means that he is no bigger than 11/2 to make it a perfect three from three.
That doesn’t look particularly generous and I’m prepared to take something of a flier with stablemate REMARKABLE.
He can be backed at a whopping each-way price of 16/1 with Betway, who are incidentally refunding stakes on win bets if your horse finishes second in this race.
Being a son of Pivotal, the conditions should be ideal and he really caught the eye behind Log Out Island at Newbury last time.
The step back up to seven furlongs looks just what the doctor ordered.
I’m also going to have a small each-way saver on HAALICK at 16/1 with Coral back on a more conventional track and, more importantly, with a visor fitted for the first time.
Finally, it was exactly 21 years ago that John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori teamed up to win the Sandringham Handicap (5.35pm) with Cask.
The pair can again send punters home happy if PERSUASIVE can land the nightcap at 7/1.
She was unbelievably impressive when completing the hat-trick at Chelmsford last time and can continue on her steep upward curve.
