King pens contract extension
TOTTENHAM captain Ledley King insists the club is on the threshold of an exciting new era after signing a contract extension at White Hart Lane.
The centre-back, who came through the Spurs academy and has since made more than 290 appearances, has agreed a deal that will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2012.
Chronic knee problems restricted King to 20 games during the most recent campaign, but the 29-year-old still played a crucial role as Tottenham secured a Champions League qualifying spot for the first time. Now the prospect of playing in European club football’s most prestigious competition, as well as the north London outfit’s plans for a new stadium, have got the defender looking forward to the future.
“I am delighted to have signed a new contract with Spurs. I have been here since I was a schoolboy and I could never see myself going anywhere else. This is where I want to continue playing my football,” said King.
“We’ve got the prospect of Champions League football to look forward to next season and with the quality of players we have I believe we are on the brink of something big.
“It’s an exciting time for the club with a new training ground being built and plans for a new stadium. I am enjoying my football and want to be a part of what is happening here.”
King has enjoyed a resurgence under manager Harry Redknapp, who has allowed King to play and train at his own pace. The approach has been so successful that King appears to have forced himself into Fabio Capello’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup.
