FULHAM (1) vs FC BASEL (0)

FULHAM climbed to the top of their Europa League group with a hard-fought victory over Swiss side FC Basel.

Captain Danny Murphy fired home the game’s only goal on 58 minutes after being set up by striker Andrew Johnson.

Johnson was a threat throughout, and had a late penalty appeal turned down, although the Cottagers were grateful to keeper Mark Schwarzer who denied Mark Chipperfield in the final minute.

The result ensured Fulham went top of Group E after Roma beat CSKA Sofia 2-0 in the other match.

Everton also enjoyed a hard-fought win after they came from behind to beat Belarusian side BATE Borisov 2-1.

Dmitri Likhtarovich gave the hosts a first half lead with a stunning 35-yard effort before Marouane Fellaini equalised for the Toffees with his first of the season.

Then, nine minutes later, Tim Cahill headed home the winner from Diniyar Bilyaletdinov’s flick-on to make it two wins from two for David Moyes’ men.
