Murray makes history on clay
WORLD No3 Andy Murray became the first Briton since Buster Mottram in 1976 to win an ATP-ranked clay-court title yesterday after defeating Germany’s Phillip Kohlschreiber 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) in an enthralling Munich Open final.
Victory marked the Scot’s maiden 2015 tournament triumph as he prepares for the French Open, which starts on 24 May.
“It was tough. He served very close to the line and I was getting frustrated,” said Murray. “I didn’t realise I was the first Brit to win on clay for so long, so that’s an honour.”
