Gary Lineker’s The Rest Is Football podcast will continue on Netflix for the next two seasons following the success of its run during the World Cup.

The hit show, which also stars former England internationals Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, will focus on the Premier League and Champions League in twice-weekly episodes on the streaming platform from August.

It comes after The Rest Is Football proved popular during an initial 40-day run of daily episodes at the World Cup, which concluded on Sunday night when Spain beat Argentina in the final.

“We had a brilliant time making the show during the World Cup, and the response was incredible, so it’s great to be back on Netflix every week throughout the Premier League season,” said Lineker.

“The Rest Is Football podcast will continue across the week too, while the Netflix show gives us another chance to get stuck into the biggest stories. Expect plenty of opinions, plenty of laughs and, with Alan and Micah involved, probably a few arguments as well.”

The show is produced by Goalhanger, former BBC presenter Lineker’s podcast business, which also makes The Rest Is History, The Rest Is Politics and The Rest Is Entertainment.

How The Rest Is Football recreates Match of the Day

A deal with Netflix gives The Rest Is Football a strategic advantage over rivals shows hosted on YouTube, whose audiences could be dented by the UK’s incoming social media restrictions for under-18s.

New episodes will be released every Monday and Friday for the next two club football seasons in a deal that takes the show up to, but does not yet include, Euro 2028.

The line-up of Lineker, Shearer and Richards effectively recreates the discussion and analysis segments of Match of the Day, the BBC’s flagship football highlights show which Lineker helmed for two decades until being forced out last season.

“We launched The Rest Is Football after the last World Cup, and it’s incredible to see how far the show has come in such a short space of time,” said Goalhanger co-founder Tony Pastor.

“We began from such a strong position because Gary, Alan and Micah are genuinely close friends who talk about football together constantly. The aim was to capture that warmth, wit and energy, and make listeners feel part of the conversation.

“Netflix allowed us to preserve everything that makes the show special: sometimes serious, frequently hilarious, but always genuine and warm. We’re delighted that Netflix has enjoyed working with the show this summer and has chosen to extend the partnership for a further two years.”
