Ford C-Max Zetec 1.6 TDCi £19,345
The Ford C-Max Zetec 1.6 TDCi easily outdrives the Citroën and it’s also almost £5,000 cheaper. It’s a tad behind the Picasso on acceleration (0-62mph 11.3 seconds) but trails a bit on top speed (114mph). It’s also behind the Picasso’s impressive CO2 emissions with 117g/km and its fuel consumption isn’t quite so good either (61.4mpg). It also has much less boot space, with just 471 litres compared to the 537.
Kia Carens 1.7 CRDi ISG 5dr from £19,295
The Kia Carens rightly fancies itself in the style stakes, though I think the new Picasso has just outdressed it. It’s an easy-going, comfortable car but it’s slower than the Picasso, with a pedestrian 0-60mph of 12.6 seconds and a top speed of 115mph. It’s even less competitive than the Ford C-Max when it comes to economy and emissions, getting just 60.1mpg and spouting 124g/km of CO2.
VW Touran £20,765
This 1.6-litre TDI VW Touran is a sensible choice if you’re more interested in residuals than performance. It’s more expensive but it should keep its value better than the others. It’s also got the most generous boot – a whopping 1913 litres with the seats folded away. All well and good, but with the seats up it has a minuscule 12. It’s slower and less powerful, with a 0-62mph time of 12.8 seconds and a top speed of 114mph.
