Platini apology over price of European final tickets
EUROPEAN chief Michel Platini has apologised for the high prices of tickets to this year’s Champions League final at Wembley and has said that Uefa, the governing body, will look to introduce a cheaper ticket category for families in the future.
Fans reacted with outrage when Uefa announced the cheapest tickets available for the final on 28 May would cost £150 plus an additional administration fee of £26. The cheapest package for one adult and one child costs £338.
Uefa president Platini, who was in London yesterday for the handover of the Champions League trophy, said: “It was a mistake. But it is not easy to decide the price of the tickets in the Champions League final.”
The Frenchman added that tickets for the final were now being sold for far more than Uefa originally charged.
He added: “We received 200,000 requests for 10,000 tickets and now on the black market these tickets are 10 times the price we decided.
“Perhaps in the future we have to have another category for families that is less expensive. It was not a good communication and I apologise about that.”
In the build-up to the final, the Champions League trophy will be on display at various venues in London from today until Friday 20 May, starting at Duke of York Square and taking in Spitalfields Market (28-30 April) and Canary Wharf (5-6 May) ending up at City Hall (17-18 May).
