Last summer the Premier League managed to splurge just short of a £1bn on transfers – a record £835m – almost double the sum spent by La Liga. It's already over half way to that total having spent more than £500m.

With a £5bn broadcasting deal forthcoming, clubs appear to be more inspired than ever to splash out on securing their position in England's elite. Already the record for an English player has been broken thanks to Manchester City's £49m acquisition of Raheem Sterling.
