Revitalised Woods plans not to fall back on Pavin wild card
TIGER WOODS says he will play in the Ryder Cup – if he is offered a wild card by USA captain Corey Pavin.
The world No1 questioned if he wanted to play on the American team at Celtic Manor in October after carding a career-worst 18 over par total at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akon at the weekend.
But as he goes in search of his 15th Major title at the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits, starting tomorrow, the mindset has suddenly changed.
Woods lies 10th on the American points list – just outside the eight automatic places – and is looking for a high place finish in Wisconsin to take the matter out of Pavin’s hands.
Asked if he would accept a captain’s pick, Woods replied: “Yes. Hopefully I won’t be a pick. I would like to be able to play myself onto that team.”
Indeed, Woods insists he can recover from his poor form last week and launch a bid for a fourth USPGA title at Wisconsin this weekend.
“One of the great things about this sport is that no matter how poorly or how well you play the week before, it all begins anew,” he said. “We all have a chance this week and hopefully I can get it done.”
