Wimbledon 2015: Serena Williams argues women deserve greater show court time

World No1 Serena Williams insisted that women are under-represented on Wimbledon’s main courts after recovering from a set down to overcome Belarusian Victoria Azarenka yesterday.

Five-time champion Williams dispatched Aazarenka 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to progress to tomorrow’s semi-finals where fourth seed Maria Sharapova lies in wait – a repeat of this year’s Australian Open final.

Claiming the SW19 title would see Williams hold all four grand slam singles titles at the same time for the second time in her career, and represent the third leg in her quest to net all Majors in a calendar year.

“We made progress making sure that women have more featured matches. It’s just a little bit at a time,” said Williams. “We’re still fighting on that. Hopefully we’ll get to the point where we have more featured matches.”

Former tournament winner Sharapova, meanwhile, reached her fifth semi-final at the All England Club by beating hard-hitting world No47 Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic will play Croatia’s Marin Cilic in the last eight after winning the decisive set of his truncated clash with big-serving Kevin Anderson, prevailing 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 6-4, 7-5.
