Headingley crackdown on fans
CRICKET: Security has been increased at Headingley to avoid repeats of the rowdy behaviour at the fourth Ashes Test, which starts tomorrow.
Some 81 fans were ejected from the Leeds ground when England played South Africa last year and, following the booing of Australia captain Ricky Ponting at Edgbaston, Yorkshire County Cricket Club have vowed to take action.
Bath look to stamp out scandals
RUGBY UNION: Bath have set up a five-man leadership group to prevent a repeat of the scandals that have tarnished their reputation this year.
Three former players – Michael Lipman, Alex Crockett and Andrew Higgins – were this week banned for eight months for missing drug tests. That followed admissions of drug use from ex-colleagues Justin Harrison and Matt Stevens.
Celtic clinch play-off spot
FOOTBALL: Striker Giorgios Samaras struck an injury-time winner to send Celtic into the Champions League play-offs at the expense of Dinamo Moscow.
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Glasgow, Celtic equalised through Scott McDonald’s header just before half-time.
With extra-time looming Samaras gathered a long ball, beat three defenders and found the bottom-left corner.
Mason misses out at Worlds
ATHLETICS: Olympic high jump silver medalist Germaine Mason has been ruled out of the World Championships with an ankle injury. The Jamaican has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering ligament damage during last Friday’s Grand Prix event in Stockholm.
