Manchester to host Haye return
BOXING: Britain’s David Haye will make the first defence of his WBA world heavyweight championship against John Ruiz in Manchester on 3 April.
American Ruiz is the mandatory challenge for Haye, who clinched the title with a crushing defeat of Russian giant Nikolay Valuev in November.
“It’s been 10 years since the heavyweight championship has been fought in Britain,” said Londoner Haye. “Now it’s time to showcase my skills again in front of the great British public.”
Lopez seals US F1 drive
FORMULA ONE: Jose Maria Lopez has become the first Argentinian driver to clinch an F1 drive for nine years after being confirmed in the line-up for new team US F1.
Former Renault test driver Lopez, 26, will make his debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix on 14 March and said: “This is a truly memorable day for me, my family and the people of Argentina.”
Arthur quits as Proteas chief
CRICKET: Mickey Arthur has stunned the cricketing world by quitting as coach of South Africa just days before the team leave on a tour of India.
“All good things must come to an end and now is the time for someone else to take over,” said Arthur, who led the Proteas to a recent 1-1 draw with England. Corrie van Zyl has been installed as stand-in coach for the India tour which consists of two Tests and three one-day international matches.
Lloyd to probe review system
CRICKET: World governing body the International Cricket Council (ICC) have appointed West Indian legend Clive Lloyd to investigate the decision review system issues from the recent Test series between England and South Africa.
“We understand the need to continue enhancing the system in these early days,” said ICC chief Haroon Lorgat. “I’m sure this independent investigation will assist in that regard.”
