Mitchell finally gets title shot
BOXING: Londoner Kevin Mitchell has earned himself a shot for the WBO lightweight title in the summer.
Mitchell, 25, knocked out Ignacio Mendoza at Wembley on Saturday to extend his record to 31-0 and become mandatory challenger for Michael Katsidis’s crown.
Veteran Lane denied in India
GOLF: Barry Lane’s bid to become the oldest ever winner on the European Tour fell just short after he finished in a tie for third at the Avantha Masters in India.
The 49-year-old was one of seven players tied for the lead going into the final day, but his 71 saw him finish two shots behind Australian Andrew Dodt, whose 68 was enough to earn him a maiden title on 14-under-par.
Brough puts Wakefield on top
RUGBY LEAGUE: Danny Brough scored 16 points to help Wakefield continue their 100 per cent start to the Super League season with a 28-18 victory over Leeds.
Elsewhere, St Helens registered their first win with a comprehensive 38-6 victory at Bradford Bulls, while Harlequins beat Catalans Dragons 16-4.
Dick Francis dies, aged 89
RACING: Former jockey and best-selling author Dick Francis has died at the age of 89.
Francis wrote 42 novels and was seen by many as one of the best thriller writers ever. He was also champion jockey in the 1950s and was on board the Queen Mother’s Devon Loch, which collapsed just 50 yards from victory in the 1956 Grand National.
