Goode signing for Worcester
RUGBY UNION: Relegation-threatened Worcester have landed a coup by completing the signing of England international fly-half Andy Goode for next season.
The Brive star will make the move to Sixways after finishing a five-week deal with South African Super 14 side, Sharks.
Warriors director of rugby Mike Ruddock is a long-term admirer of Goode and tried to sign the 29-year-old two years ago, before his switch from Leicester to Brive.
Goode won the most recent of his 17 England caps in June.
Harry gets the nod for Doha
ATHLETICS: Harry Aikines-Aryeetey has been given the nod to partner Dwain Chambers in the Great Britain squad for the World Indoor Championships in Doha.
The 21-year-old sealed the last squad place by posting a 60m time of 6.55secs to finish second in the trials at Sheffield earlier this month. Scot Nick Smith, who ran 6.60secs at the Aviva Grand Prix on Saturday, misses out.
British hopes of a medal rest mainly with world champion heptathlete Jessica Ennis, who goes in the pentathlon, and triple-jumper Phillips Idowu.
The championships take place from 12-14 March.
Monty joy at Euro feast
GOLF: Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie believes the performances of the Europeans at last week’s WGC Match Play are a major boost to his hopes of regaining the trophy at Celtic Manor this year.
Ian Poulter won the event by beating fellow Englishman Paul Casey in the final, while Spaniard Sergio Garcia reached the semi-finals.
“Putting my captain’s hat on it was marvellous to see so many Europeans do so well, especially to have three players in the semi-finals,” Montgomerie said.
“This all bodes well for the start of October and proves that the European players are improving all the time.”
