The Bakerloo line extension to Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate and Lewisham just came a step closer
The Tube's about to go (further) south of the river, after Transport for London (TfL) came a step closer to getting the go-ahead for an extension of the Bakerloo line, which will extend to Old Kent Road and Lewisham.
In a statement today, TfL said it will begin "detailed technical work" next year, to "build a case" for the extension, which could be launched by 2030.
If it's given the green light, TfL will seek planning permission in 2020, with construction beginning in 2024.
The line would have the capacity for 65,000 journeys in each direction, the organisation said, reducing journey times in central London by up to 20 minutes.
TfL also reckons it has the potential to "unlock" 25,000 new homes in the areas.
Don't get too excited yet, though: Richard de Cani, TfL's managing director for planning, cautioned that "no final decisions have been made". Bah, humbug….
