THE WILD ONE: OTHER CANADIAN ADVENTURES

Husky Adventure in the Yukon
Learn the basics of mushing, and each day the trails through some of the most spectacular wilderness in Canada’s Yukon advance in difficulty. Relax in the evenings with a sauna and in a lodge by a wood stove. Dog sledding is integral to the local culture throughout Yukon and most of the guides are native to the area.

From CA$1,990 for eight days, mostly all-inclusive, plus flights. The Great Excursions Company, www.greatexcursions.travel

White-water rafting
Journeying through the heart of the wild west of Canada the inflatable raft takes you 180km from high in the mountains of Chilko River to the pine forests and grasslands of the Chilcotin River and down into desert-like terrain. This trip has the most white water of all the ones offered by Canadian River Expeditions, yet is suitable for beginners. Includes lakeside camping, fishing, gentle flat-water floating, white-water rafting and pick-up by chartered plane from Vancouver, for a flight over the coastal mountains.
CA$4,875 for 11 days all-inclusive, plus flights to Vancouver. Canadian River Expeditions, www.nahanni.com

Single-track mountain biking
If single-track is your passion, this week climaxes with the stunning Jumping Pound/Cox Hill Ride. Rated as one of the best in North America, it’s a challenging, switchbacking, single-track climb up the side of a mountain (followed by lunch at the top), then a ridge ride at 2,185m surrounded by the massive Rocky Mountains. The week includes optional skills workshops with certified instructors.

From CA$1,895 for eight days’ accommodation, meals, fees and transport, ex flights and bike rental. Responsible Travel, www.responsibletravel.com
