Politics triumphed in terms of internet searches in the UK in 2016, new research out today shows.

Brexit beat the Olympics, Euro 2016, David Bowie, Andy Murray and even Celebrity Big Brother to be the top searched term this year.

Take the findings with a pinch of salt – they are based on searches made on Yahoo, which, as Morning Wire established earlier this year, is unlikely to ever become a verb in the same way as Google.

Unsurprisingly, Brexit also won in Yahoo’s 2016 news searches, coming in ahead of US election, Tory leadership, pound exchange rate and Labour leadership.

Also in the top 10 news searches were Madeleine McCann, Calais migrants, Oscar Pistorius, celebrity injunction and Turkey unrest.

One final gem from the research: Yahoo claims the fourth most popular question submitted on Yahoo in 2016 was… “How do I set Yahoo as my homepage?”
