RELAIS DE VENISE L’ENTRECOTE
This beloved Parisian chain of steak houses doesn’t do much but what it does it does well. Well enough to have Parisians queuing outside (in Paris) for a seat. Here, we can’t get enough of the salad, steak in special green sauce, chips (several plates-full)?and simple but delicious desserts of profiteroles and mousse. 5 Throgmorton Street EC2N 2AD. Tel: 020 7638 6325.

CLUB GASCON
This is Michelin-starred, heavy-hitting Gallic food in an elegant, executive-feeling environment; nestled in the shadow of the Barbican. Food hails frm Gascony; and at the moment includes the likes of sturgeon bordelaise with sweet onions and samphire, and glazed snails with fennel, wild garlic and gladiola. 57 West Smithfield EC1 9DS, tel: 020 7796 0600.

THE DON RESTAURANT AND BISTRO
One of the City’s most tried and true spots for fine dining and great wine, this sturdy French restaurant always has something rich or seasonal (or both)?on the menu. Pot roast pheasant, roast rack of lamb and slow-cooked lamb breast and roast (yes, lots of roast meat here) suckling pig are all on the menu. The Courtyard, 20 St. Swithins Lane, EC4N 8AD.
