UK coronavirus: Death toll jumps by more than 100 in a day

The UK coronavirus death toll has jumped by more than 100 in a day for the first time, reaching 578 in total.

As of 5pm this evening, 115 people across the UK had died in the previous 24 hours after contracting the virus.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases in the UK rose to 11,658. A total of 104,866 people have been tested so far, with 93,208 negative results.

Six people died in Wales, Northern Ireland recorded three deaths and a further three passed away in Scotland.

Public Health Wales announced yesterday afternoon that it has confirmed 113 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases to 741, “although the true number of cases is likely to be higher”.

In Northern Ireland, a further 32 people tested positive for coronvirus.

In total, 414 people in England have died from Covid-19 so far, after 28 deaths were reported yesterday.

The UK government has imposed restrictions on socialising and work in a bid to reduce the spread of the virus throughout the country.
