UK coronavirus death toll rises to 16,509
The UK coronavirus death toll has hit 16,509 after a further 449 people were confirmed to have died in hospital after testing positive for Covid-19.
The figure, which includes deaths as of 5pm yesterday, is the lowest daily increase in deaths for two weeks.
However the number of reported hospital fatalities is often lower on Sundays and Mondays due to delays in registering deaths over the weekend.
The Department of Health and Social Care announced today that as of 9am this morning, 124,743 people in the UK had tested positive for coronavirus. In total, 386,044 people have been tested.
So far, 501,379 tests have been carried out, with 19,316 completed yesterday.
“Due to changes in the way Northern Ireland report the number of individuals tested, the cumulative total for people tested in the UK is lower than would be expected,” the government said as it announced the daily figures.
