US Presidential Election: Carly Fiorina suspends campaign for Republican candidacy in 2016 White House race after poor showing in New Hampshire primary
Carly Fiorina has suspended her campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination ahead of this year's US Presidential Election.
Fiorina was previously chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, and in 2009-2010 ran as a Republican candidate for the California Senate but was defeated by Democrat Barbara Boxer. She was also a senior adviser to Republican Party Presidential candidate John McCain in the 2008 race.
"While I suspend my candidacy today, I will continue to travel this country and fight for those Americans who refuse to settle for the way things are and a status quo that no longer works for them," Fiorina said in a statement on Facebook.
Fiorina received just four per cent of the vote at the New Hampshire primary last night.
Meanwhile, New Jersey governor Chris Christie is reportedly planning to suspend his bid for the White House after a similarly poor showing in New Hampshire. With just 7.4 per cent of the vote, Christie trailed fellow Republican candidates Donald Trump, John Kasich, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio.
Trump and his Democrat rival Bernie Sanders both took home decisive victories in the primary.
Trump, who received more than twice as many votes as the runner-up, told a cheering crowd: “We are going to make America great again."
New Hampshire is the second state to choose candidates in the long run-up to the US presidential election, following the caucuses in Iowa a week ago. Iowa was won by Clinton for the Democrats and Ted Cruz for the Republicans.
The next states to hold primaries will be South Carolina and Nevada.
