WONDER WATCHES FOR GADGET JUNKIES
At last month’s BaselWorld Watch & Jewellery fair in Switzerland, the annual shindig in which the world’s watch companies get together to show off their latest creations, the watches that held particular appeal for gadget fans ranged from the disarmingly simple to the unbelievably complicated.
In the simple (red) corner there was Bell & Ross, a company known for its chunky, military-style aviation timepieces. Its BR 01 Red Radar looks like the kind of thing you’d find in the control deck of a submarine, and consists of three discs rotating at different speeds – the outer disc shows the hours, the middle the minutes and the inner the seconds. Simple, but very cool.
Over in the complicated-and-then-some corner, we have the Opus 11 from Harry Winston, one of the most remarkable feats of engineering and design anyone will ever strap to their wrist. Designed by horologist extraordinaire Denis Giguet, it uses rotating, revolving placards to “explode” the centrally-displayed hour time every 60 minutes, re-ordering into the new hour. Minutes are shown in rotating disks in separate housing. Only 111 are being made.
