Wimbledon tennis finals to be played with capacity crowds
Capacity crowds will be allowed into the Centre Court stadium to watch the finals of the Wimbledon tennis championships, which begin on 28 June.
Both the men’s and women’s singles finals will be played in front of 15,000 fans, the All England Tennis club announced tonight, the first outdoor events to take place with a full crowd since the pandemic began.
The rest of the matches over the course of the two week tournament will start with a 50 per cent capacity restriction, the club said.
The matches are being included in the government’s programme of pilot events to research the spread of coronavirus in such settings.
There were also reports that the knockout matches of the Euro 2021 football tournament to be played at Wembley would take place in front of 45,000 fans.
Wimbledon was cancelled last year for the first time since the Second World War because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are continuing to work closely with the Government to finalise the details of our participation in the Event Research Programme, including the requirements for Covid-status certification for spectators. We will be issuing a further update on Wednesday 16 June to confirm these details”, the club said in a statement.
