A WEEKEND is a long time in sport, as this lot will attest. But while for some it was a few days to remember, others may wish they had never set foot out of the house.
CHELSEA
Many would have forgiven Carlo Ancelotti’s men for showing signs of nerves with a first Premier League title in four years just 90 minutes away. Not Chelsea. Nicolas Anelka’s early strike opened the floodgates for the Blues to clinch the title in fine style, blitzing poor Wigan and taking their goal tally to 103.
KEVIN PIETERSEN
The man can simply do no wrong. KP’s quickfire fifty helped England to victory over South Africa in the World Twenty20, now he’s back home to attend the birth of his first child with the intention of returning to the West Indies to fire England in the semis.
BATH RUGBY
Continued their impressive end-of-season surge with a crushing 39-3 victory over Leeds to seal their place in the Premiership play-off. They now face league winners Leicester – and who would bet against them now marching on even further.
LEWIS HAMILTON
Saw his chances of respectable second place dashed after suffering a puncture on the penultimate lap and crashing out of the Spanish Grand Prix. The 2008 world champion now lies joint sixth in the championship standings, while team-mate and fellow Brit, Jenson Button, still leads the way.
TIGER WOODS
It doesn’t rain but it pours for the world No1. After missing the cut in the Quail Hollow Championship, Tiger had the bit between his teeth to win the richest prize in golf, the Players’ Championship. But Woods didn’t even last the four days, withdrawing from the final round with a neck injury while well off the pace.
