Woods ditches putter after 11 years
WORLD No1 Tiger Woods has opted for a change of putter for the first time in 11 years as he goes in search of a third straight Open success at the Home of Golf.
Poor form on the greens has prompted Woods to ditch the model which helped him to win 13 of his 14 Major titles for a new Nike putter which he has been practising with ahead of tomorrow’s opening tee-off.
“I’ve always struggled on slower greens and the one I’ve gone to this week comes off faster and I’ve had to make very little adjustment,” said Woods, who won the Open here in both 2000 and 2005.
“I’ve always been tempted to change my putter on slower greens. I’ve always struggled when greens are really slow. I always feel more comfortable when the greens get quick.”
Woods was keeping tight-lipped on his personal problems as he faced the world’s media, except to say that his marriage difficulties would not have any affect on his bid to land a fourth Claret Jug.
“It doesn’t impact on it at all,” he added. “I’m here to play the old course at St Andrews – the Home of Golf – it’s as good as it gets. I would like to win no matter what.”
