In pictures: Bugatti reckons its £1.7m Chiron, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show today, will break world speed records
As the Geneva Motor Show opened its doors today, Bugatti launched one of the most anticipated cars of the show: its €2.4m (£1.7m) Chiron.
At a press conference, the company said its follow-up to the Veyron, the speed of which has been "limited" to 420km/h (260mph), is "ready for a new world speed record".
"The Chiron is… very well-positioned to become the next world speed record holder and reach a maximum speed significantly above the [current] record" – which at the moment is held by… Bugatti.
The car is the first ever production vehicle to offer 1,500 horsepower, pushing it from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2.5 seconds.
Got £1.7m burning a hole in your pocket? You'd better move fast: Wolfgang Duerheimer, Bugatti's president, said a third of the 500 vehicles it plans to produce are already on order – with the first due to roll off the production line in the autumn.
“It is part of human nature to cross boundaries and set new records – to run 100m faster than ever before, to fly even further into space and to enter new realms. This striving is also our driving force at Bugatti,” said Dürheimer.
“The Chiron is the result of our efforts to make the best even better."
