Hillsborough inquest verdict: 96 Liverpool fans were “unlawfully killed”, jury rules
A jury has ruled that 96 people were "unlawfully killed" during the Hillsborough disaster 27 years ago.
Following the longest jury proceedings in British legal history, which started on 1 April 2014, the Hillsborough inquests have delivered a damning verdict on the role played by authorities in the tragedy.
Families of the victims were seen crying and applauding after a jury ruled that the South Yorkshire Police had made errors in planning and policing the turnstiles which led to supporters being crushed inside the Sheffield stadium during the match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989.
The jury ruled no supporters' misbehaviour inside the stadium led to any deaths.
The new inquests were ordered in December 2012 after the original 1991 verdict of accidental death was quashed following the publication of the Hillsborough Independent Report.
