Vodafone is to begin testing 5G mobile network benefits in UK smart cars

Vodafone is to begin tests of new mobile connection technology to let cars talk to each, possibly preventing crashes, on UK roads.

The telecoms giant has plans to use the 5G mobile network to let cars send messages to each other to signal their intention to change lane, indicate, or emergency stop.

Last month some of the world’s biggest telecom equipment makers pledged to work with car giants on the infrastructure required to make driverless vehicles a reality.

Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Nokia, and Qualcomm are all working with German car makers Audi, BMW, and Mercedes owner Daimler to put together the technology.

David Lister, Vodafone 5G research manager, and Bob Banks, research and development programme manager wrote in a blog post:

Vodafone is now testing new technology to enable vehicles to talk to each other and to roadside infrastructure over greater distances. We are currently driving the development of this new technology, known as LTE-V2X, which means connecting Vehicles to Everything (V2X).
