CHELSEA manager Carlo Ancelotti defended his misfiring strikers after his three main men failed to find a way past FC Copenhagen in last night’s Champions League stalemate.
Having gone five games without a goal for his new club since his record-breaking £50m move from Liverpool, Fernando Torres was dropped to the bench last night, but neither Didier Drogba or Nicolas Anelka impressed in his place.
Torres replaced the Frenchman after 65 minutes but was again unable to break his duck against modest opposition as Chelsea progressed to the last eight without building on their 2-0 win in Denmark three weeks ago.
Of their three principle strikers only Anelka, with his brace in Copenhagen, has managed to get on the scoresheet since Torres’ arrival, but Ancelotti is confident the goals will flow sooner rather than later.
He said: “They are all fantastic players, we have a fantastic squad. We obviously need to be more precise in front of goal, but these are little details.
“We didn’t need to score today because we won 2-0 in the first leg. We had a lot of opportunities, we played well and had 24 shots.
“I will decide game by game who plays, all the players are fit. The last game Salomon Kalou was important for us in Blackpool, and in the Champions League first leg Anelka scored two goals.”
Chelsea dominated their opponents but were unable to find the killer touch in front of goal with John Obi Mikel coming the closest to scoring with a second-half header which hit the crossbar.
Mourinho and Real too good for Lyon
REAL MADRID progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in seven years following a 3-0 win over Lyon last night.
The Spanish side, who drew the first leg 1-1 in France, will be a side to avoid in tomorrow’s draw following goals from Marcelo, Karim Benzema and Angel di Maria.
