Germany braces for another heatwave as temperatures climb back above 30°C

Germany is heading into another punishing heatwave this weekend, with the German Weather Service (DWD) forecasting highs of 30 to 36°C across central and southern regions from Sunday. The far north will remain the only area below 30°C, while heat-stress warnings are expected where temperatures exceed 32°C.

The surge follows two cooler days on Thursday and Friday that gave much of the country a brief chance to ventilate homes overnight. Meteorologists say Saturday will see the mercury climb to 30, 33°C in the southwest and south, with 25, 29°C elsewhere. By Sunday, the core of the heat settles in, bringing the first official heat-stress alerts of this latest spell.

North stays cooler, but storms loom

While the north escapes the worst of the heat, staying near 25°C with some rain expected early next week, the rest of the country faces a familiar pattern: abundant sunshine, daily highs between 30 and 35°C, and an increasing risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms as humidity builds. The DWD describes conditions further south, extending to the low mountain ranges, as "classic summer weather" with highs of 25, 30°C and occasional cloud.

Water scarcity concerns grow

The persistent heat compounds existing drought stress. Authorities have already flagged water scarcity disrupting life in parts of Germany, with restrictions in place in several districts. Farmers in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg report declining soil moisture, and forest fire risk remains elevated across central states.
