Golden girl Jess is in a seventh heaven
BRITAIN’S golden girl Jessica Ennis spoke of her “amazing feeling” after claiming Britain’s first ever heptathlon gold medal at the World Championships on a memorable night in Berlin.
The 23-year-old led the seven-discipline event from start to finish, eventually securing a landmark success with victory in her heat of the 800m.
Ennis finished with an impressive 6,731 points – 238 clear of Germany’s Jennifer Oeser and Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska in third.
“It’s been the longest two days of my life but the best,” a delighted Ennis said. “I can’t believe it. I’m the world champion, I feel like crying.
“I’ve dreamt so many times about winning medals and becoming world champion, doing a lap of honour. It’s the best feeling in the world. I can’t even put into words how I feel right now, it’s such an adrenaline rush and such an amazing feeling.”
Victory was even sweeter for Ennis given that she missed out on the Beijing Olympics last summer due to a stress fracture to her right ankle which almost ended her career.
“I was at such a low point last year so to come back from that and so strongly, it’s amazing,” she added.
Minutes after Ennis’ success came a moment of history when Usain Bolt put in a sensational performance to shatter his own 100m record set in Beijing last summer, by 0.11 seconds.
The Jamaican raced home in an incredible 9.58 seconds ahead of American Tyson Gay (9.71) and countryman Asafa Powell (9.84).
Britain’s Dwain Chambers came home sixth in a season’s best 10.00.
“I knew it was going to be a great race and I came out and executed it,” Bolt said. “It’s a great time. I did well and I feel good in myself.”
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu only just squeezed into the final of the 800m, while David Greene is into today’s men’s 400m hurdles final.
