Injured Broad to miss rest of England’s Ashes assault
ENGLAND’S hopes of retaining the Ahses suffered a significant setback last night with news that fast bowler Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour with a stomach injury.
The 24-year-old was forced from the field on day four, having completed just 11 overs as part of England’s bid to bowl the home side out and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
He bowled in the nets with strapping around his stomach but the injury has proved too serious and scans confirmed he had torn an abdominal muscle.
Broad will fly home immediately and concentrate on getting fit in time for mid February when England head to India for the 50 over World Cup.
Broad said: “Playing for England in an Ashes series in Australia has been something I’ve dreamed of for a long time so to have that cut short because of injury is devastating.
“So far the series has been everything I had anticipated and knowing I’ll play no further part is hard to take.
I was looking forward to playing a leading role in England retaining the Ashes, but that’s not to be. My focus will have to shift to preparing for the World Cup.”
