It’s D-Day for Terry as boss Fabio flies in
JOHN TERRY will finally discover whether he will remain as England captain today following showdown talks with boss Fabio Capello.
The Chelsea defender is set for talks with the Italian coach after stories emerged at the weekend of an alleged affair with an ex-partner of England colleague and former Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge.
Capello touched down in Britain from Switzerland yesterday, where he had been recovering from a knee operation, and was ushered into a waiting car, refusing to answer any questions to the media scrum.
Manager and captain are expected to meet up for crisis talks this morning to determine whether Terry should remain as skipper for the forthcoming World Cup campaign in the wake of the allegations.
Terry has boldly played on twice for Chelsea since the story was exposed and is believed to want to carry on as normal and lead the team in South Africa. But although Capello would ideally want the 29-year-old to continue as skipper, he has to examine the possible effect the allegations have on the dynamics of his dressing room.
Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce spoke out on Wednesday slamming the “witch-hunt” of Terry in the media and insisting the 58-cap centre-back was the right man for the job.
But one of Capello’s predecessors, Graham Taylor, however, insists it doesn’t matter whether Terry stays as England captain or not, just as long as he is on the plane to South Africa.
He said: “We overstate the importance of it [captaincy]. It is an honour to be captain of England but if we are saying we will miss John Terry as a captain more than we would as a player then something is wrong.”
