Lemi’s winner proves a mere consolation as Wasps are left to regret Glasgow defeat

WASPS director of rugby Tony Hanks admits his side have been left with a sense of ‘what could’ve been’ after they crashed out of the Heineken Cup despite a last-gasp win over reigning champions Toulouse at Adams Park.
In front of a record home crowd (10,014) at the Wycombe venue David Lemi’s last-minute try secured a deserved victory, but hopes of progression to the quarter-finals had already been dashed prior to kick-off when news of pool leaders Leicester’s win over Perpignan filtered through.
Victory at least ensured Wasps qualified as top seeds for the quarter-finals of the Amlin Challenge Cup, where they will travel to Harlequins, but it could not mask their sense of regret following last weeks surprise and damaging defeat against Glasgow.
“There will be plenty of times over the next two months, particularly when we see Toulouse play in the quarter-finals, when we will think ‘what could have been’ but we have to move on,” Hanks said.
“At least we fronted up and the guys can look in the mirror and be proud of the performance.
“Everyone really hurt this week. The first few days [after the Glasgow defeat] were horrible but rather than turn up today sulking about it, we attempted to repay our supporters.”
