Lord Sewel takes leave amid drug and prostitute scandal
Lord Sewel said last night that he would take a leave of absence from the House of Lords pending a police investigation into allegations that he took drugs with prostitutes.
Over the weekend, the Sun on Sunday newspaper published video footage appearing to show an undressed Sewel snorting cocaine through a rolled-up bank note with two women.
On Sunday, the former Labour minister resigned as deputy speaker of the House of Lords and chairman of the privileges and conduct committee, and yesterday the Labour party suspended his party membership.
Commenting on the scandal, Prime Minister David Cameron said “further questions will be asked” about whether it would be “appropriate” for Sewel to continue in the House of Lords.
