SEVEN-TIME Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has returned home to continue his recuperation from the skiing accident in December last year which left him fighting for his life.

The 45-year-old German suffered a head injury in a freak off-piste skiing incident in the French Alpine resort of Meribel, spending a period in intensive care in Grenoble before being transferred to a rehabilitation unit in Lausanne in June.

Despite returning to his family home on the shores of Lake Geneva, Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm has urged caution, suggesting the move does not necessarily represent a drastic improvement in the F1 legend’s health.

“Henchforth, Michael’s rehabilitation will take place at his home,” said Kehm. “Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months. “There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead and we ask that speculations about is state of health are avoided.”

Schumacher underwent two operations to remove blood clots from his brain before being placed in a medically-induced coma for 189 days in a bid to reduce swelling.

The former Ferrari driver has clocked up 91 wins from 303 Grand Prix starts, latterly in 2006 in China, while the last of his seven drivers’ championships came in 2004 at Spa in Belgium, his fifth in succession.
