Johnson mulling Stevens recall
RUGBY UNION: Martin Johnson has left the door open for Matt Stevens to make a controversial return to the England squad.
Johnson insists Stevens will be considered for next year’s World Cup if he proves his form and fitness after his two-year drugs ban expires in January.
“He has got to learn how to play rugby again. He has got to do that and play,” said Johnson. “If anyone is playing well in the Premiership with English qualifications we will consider them. Are we going to pick him on what’s happened or whether he is good enough?”
Adlington claims 400m gold
SWIMMING: Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington ensured the European Championships finished on a high for Great Britain by claiming gold in the 400m freestyle in Budapest.
Adlington trailed a disappointing seventh in the 800m last week but bounced back to help GB end third in the medals table, with six golds, six silvers and six bronzes.
Gemma Spofforth, Fran Halsall, Kate Haywood and Amy Smith took gold in the 4x100mm medley relay after Russia’s winning quartet was disqualified.
Haywood also enjoyed silver medal success in the 50m breaststroke, while Ellen Gandy claimed bronze in the 200m butterfly on her 19th birthday.
Wigan denied top spot
RUGBY LEAGUE: Huddersfield denied Wigan the chance to clinch top spot in Super League by coming from behind to beat the leaders 18-16.
Two tries from Leroy Cudjoe proved decisive for the visitors at the DW Stadium, while elsewhere, Matt King’s hat-trick of tries kept Warrington’s hopes of a top-two finish alive with a 36-18 win over Wakefield.
