Team GB close in on historic gold after curling success for Murdoch

TRIUMPHANT British skip David Murdoch is targeting a history-making gold medal in tomorrow’s curling final with reigning Olympic champions Canada.

Murdoch scored two points with the final stone of yesterday’s semi-final against Sweden to seal a 6-5 victory and at least a silver medal.

Britain have never won more than one gold medal at a single winter Games, but Murdoch and his rink can rewrite history if they successfully follow-up compatriot Lizzy Yarnold’s skeleton triumph from last week.

“I want the gold,” said Murdoch. “You get this opportunity once in a lifetime and it’s up to us to seize the day and make some incredible history.”

Team GB’s women’s curlers were beaten 6-4 by Canada yesterday and play Switzerland for the bronze medal at 8.30am this morning.

Victory for Eve Muirhead’s rink would send Team GB home with at least four medals, their best tally since 1924.

Britain’s women’s bobsleigh duo finished 12th yesterday, with Canada beating USA to the gold.

Figure skater Jenna McCorkell placed 25th in the short program and failed to qualify for today’ free program by 0.18 points.

Emma Lonsdale is Team GB’s sole representative in today’s halfpipe skiing event, after Rowan Cheshire was ruled out with concussion.
