A WEEKEND is a long time in sport, as this lot will attest. But while for some it was a few days to remember, others may wish they had never set foot out of the house.
CHELSEA
IT was do or die for the Blues at Liverpool on Sunday, but they held their nerve to claim a 2-0 victory and close in on the Premier League title, despite Manchester United’s 1-0 win at Sunderland. It’s simple now for the Blues: beat Wigan at home and a first title in four years is theirs.
RORY MCILROY
A course record 62 saw the Northern Irishman celebrate his 21st birthday with a maiden PGA Tour success in the Quail Hollow Championship, winning by four clear shots. In doing so, McIlroy becomes the youngest Tour winner since Tiger Woods in 1996.
DUCKWORTH-LEWIS
Just how England can post the equal highest score in the tournament of 191-5 and lose by eight wickets is quite baffling. Paul Collingwood is right, the rule needs to be reviewed for the shorter form of the game to avoid a repeat of last night’s farce.
JOHN HIGGINS
Oh, John Boy, what have you done? The world No1 was suspended by the WPBSA amid a potentially-damaging fixing probe after being filmed allegedly agreeing to accept £261,000 in return for fixing the outcome of frames. He denies the claim and now faces a lengthy fight to clear his name.
IRISH RUGBY
After losing out to France in the Six Nations, the Irish sought revenge in two Heineken Cup semi-finals against French sides this weekend. But in two bruising encounters, Munster crashed to Biarritz and Leinster went down to Toulouse. Then, to top it off, Connacht were defeated by Toulon in the Challenge Cup. A sobering weekend indeed.
