Battle of Prestige: BMW X3 vs Mercedes GLC
BMW’s X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC go head-to-head in the executive SUV stakes – but which German marque makes the stronger statement?
Image and functionality go hand in hand when it comes to premium SUVs. Whether you’re heading to a high-stakes meeting in Canary Wharf or travelling out of the capital for business, your choice of whip becomes an integral part of your professional prestige.
For the sake of argument in this feature, we’ve narrowed it down to two vehicles – and surprise, surprise, they’re German. So, indulge us for a moment and picture these foes eyeing each other across a corporate car park. Enter the BMW X3 and the Mercedes GLC.
Both offer high-end styling and practicality, along with various engine options, which we won’t bore you with here. Competition is also fierce at the sportier end. In the UK, the burly BMW X3 M50 competes directly against the muscular Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC.
So, which make and model really cuts the mustard? The BMW X3 or the Mercedes-Benz GLC?
BMW X3
The latest BMW X3 has a broad stance, sharp lighting and a distinctive front end. In the M50 specification, it becomes considerably more in-your-face, with performance-inspired looks that give it real kerbside presence.
But in whichever guise, the X3’s appearance will likely appeal to professionals who want to come across as fashionable, happening and ambitious.
The BMW is then, somewhat predictably, a million miles away from being perceived as conservative.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC takes a different approach.

Mercedes GLC
Graceful lines, agreeable proportions, and high-quality details make the GLC seem reserved yet confident. Even with the sportier AMG package, it doesn’t quite have the X3’s outgoing vibe. But that’s no bad thing.
The GLC uses the visual nods of ageless luxury – it doesn’t have to prove its price tag; it just needs to look good in front of any company’s headquarters or a deluxe hotel.
The X3 is perhaps the go-getter’s car, while the GLC represents someone who has possibly already achieved success.
The Performance
As we’ve alluded to, the BMW X3 M50 is the high-performance variant of the X3 range. It goes from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds. On the other hand, we have the rival to the M50 in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC. It is 0.2 seconds slower to the hallowed target.
But so what? For a driver choosing between an X3 and GLC, the more important question is whether that extra oomph matters a jot in daily life. For many, it won’t. A
conventional X3 or GLC, or one of the hybrids, will provide more than enough poke. What’s more, the entry-level prices for the internal combustion engine variants of the X3
and GLC are fairly similar – hovering below £55,000.
Inside the Executive Lounge
The two marques take quite different approaches to interior design. The BMW X3 offers a minimalist, tech-oriented cabin, with a curved display dominating the dashboard. It
feels like an executive workspace, with loads of digital functionality and a strong emphasis on connectivity.
The Mercedes GLC is rather theatrical inside. It has a portrait-style touchscreen and some premium details. Especially striking is how the interior looks in the dark when the
ambient lights are on. If you often have clients to take somewhere, it can make a better first impression.
Practicality
Both the X3 and GLC can seat five-up. The BMW offers 570 litres of boot capacity, while the Mercedes-Benz provides up to 620 litres in its standard configuration. This
amount of space is just the ticket for airport luggage, work equipment, or even family shopping.
The GLC wins slightly on out-and-out comfort for rear passengers. Yet, the X3’s boot, although smaller, has a squarer opening, making it easier to load unwieldy luggage.
Either car will easily meet the requirements of a bonkers-busy work schedule.
EVs
The X3 and GLC are also at the heart of their manufacturers’ shift towards electric vehicles (EVs). The iX3 brings the X3 name into BMW’s next generation of EVs, while the
Mercedes GLC Electric represents a major step forward for the tri-star badged brand.
But with the UK charging infrastructure still influencing EV adoption, the combustion, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants of the X3 and GLC remain relevant.
Which Makes the Better Statement?
At the performance end, the BMW X3 M50 and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC provide a heady comparison. But step back from those versions and the wider X3-versus-GLC contest becomes far more significant to the average executive.
For professionals, the BMW X3 is the brasher statement, while the Mercedes-Benz GLC is the more genteel expression of accomplishment.
Neither is a poor choice. The question is whether you want your Teutonic SUV to suggest you’re aiming for that office with your name on the door – or hint that you’ve already got there.
