Hughes hails perfect fit as Al Fayed slams Hodgson
MARK HUGHES believes his appointment as Fulham boss as a “good fit” and has targeted a top-10 finish.
Hughes, 46, was last week confirmed as Roy Hodgson’s successor after the Cottagers’ move for Ajax boss Martin Jol fell through.
And in an unexpected twist at yesterday’s press conference, Cottagers owner Mohamed Al Fayed accused former boss Roy Hodgson of “taking advantage” of Fulham.
Interrupting proceedings, he said: “Unfortunately this guy [Hodgson], after we put him where he is now, he took advantage and left us.”
Hughes, however, remained quite content, adding: “I made the decision that this is the right club for me at this time. It feels a good fit. The attraction is the opportunity to get back into work. I needed to get back to work.”
As Fulham are not in Europe this season, Hughes believes his new club can better last season’s 12th place Premier League finish.
“We don’t have the distraction of the Europa League,” added the former Manchester City boss. “That’s a big ask when you’re involved in that competition. I think the fact we haven’t got that this year is a bonus. If we can get into the top 10 this year, that’ll be good progress.”
