The Beatles’ John Lennon’s school detention slip up for sale
There’s a divide amongst the City’s better known CEOs.
First there’s the Cambridge mafia; those with old school ties, spotless school records and fine art collections.
Then, of course, there’s the boys-done-good, who left school at 16 and worked their way up from the bottom.
While you’re more likely to find the City’s university alumni scouring the valuables at London’s elite auction houses, there is something for sale at Sotheby’s that could turn the heads of less academic bosses.
Sotheby’s will auction off Beatles legend John Lennon’s old detention reports from high school next week.
The page in question records 29 occasions between September 1955 and July 1956 that he was sent to detention at Quarry Bank High School in Liverpool.
Thankfully for his teachers, Lennon left school at the age of 16. Not unlike many City slickers making waves today.
Irvine Sellar, the credit crunch-defying boss behind the Shard, started his career in a way that rivals even the Beatles for cool-factor.
Having left school at 16, Sellar was introduced to the business world by selling gloves on Petticoat Lane, before opening his first store on Carnaby Street.
When he sold his business, Mates by Irvine Sellar, in 1981 there were 90 stores nationwide. Not bad.
Nick Robertson, who recently retired from his chief role at fashion retailer Asos, was not a fan of school either.
The fashion boss dropped out age 17 after failing to get anything above D grade at A-level.
While Virgin boss Richard Branson may have gone to elite private school Stowe in Buckinghamshire, he was hardly a bookworm.
Branson dropped out of school at 16 having struggled with dyslexia. Stay out of school, kids.
